Executive Summary
The Business Executive (TBE) Communications Group, supported by the African Chamber of Trade and the International Business Council, is organizing the African Development Conference & Awards as our contribution to the collective effort to accelerate the ongoing process of achieving the socio-economic growth and development of the continent to enable it fully take its rightful place in the emergent global community. The event aims at identifying, publicly recognizing and further raising the capacities of both key institutions and leading individuals pivotally involved in Africa’s socio-economic development process, in both the private and public sectors, while also providing a unique platform for them to interact, network and exchange expertize, experiences, ideas and perspectives.
This unique pan African awards scheme and accompanying one day conference aims to acclaim and reward some of the continent’s most accomplished institutions and leaders involved in Africa’s development currently, at a time that the continent is seeking to improve the quality of its political, economic and socio-cultural leadership in order to accelerate its ongoing socio-economic, political and cultural renaissance as an integral part of the emergent global polity and economy. Rationale for the Event
Africa’s socio-economic and political renaissance began in the 1980s as countries on the continent began to address long standing development challenges by liberalizing their respective economies and substituting military dictatorships and lingering colonial rule with indigenous, multi-party democracy. But while gains have been made over the past four decades with regards to the pace and scope of development in many parts of the continent, its lack of industrialization, lack of finance and unfair terms of trade, among other shortcomings, have constrained progress.
Our impending event therefore seeks to: overcome these and other constraints by identifying best practices with regards to development efforts and adapting them to the peculiar circumstances facing countries in Africa using the expertize and experiences of award winning institutions and individuals as well as selected partners and stakeholders in the development process; and identify and publicly acclaim outstanding conduct, commitment and performance in Africa’s development process to reward the institutions and individuals who have proved exemplary in these regards, and position them as role models for others to emulate.
The conference will enable them to interact, network, exchange expertize, experiences, ideas and perspectives with a view to further accelerating their development promoting capacities and establishing new inter-personal and inter-institutional professional relationships for the benefit of the continent and its populace; while the awards will provide them with the deserved public acclaim for their contributions towards Africa’s socio-economic growth and development through their exemplary commitment and efforts.
